Upper Eyelid Surgery – Blepharoplasty

With increasing age, the skin elasticity decreases, causing the skin above and below your eyes to begin sagging. This problem is not only a cosmetic issue, but often also a health one. The skin may sag so much that it restricts vision. The reason for loosening the skin around the eye area can be, in addition to age, also radical weight loss. With aging, the tissues around the eyes, including some of the muscles supporting the eyelids, weaken. Normal fat that helps support the eyes can then move into the lower eyelids, causing the lids to appear puffy. We perform plastic surgery on the upper and lower eyelids, and to remove the tired appearance of the face, we also recommend removing the bags under the eyes as part of the surgery. The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia, so it does not require hospitalization.

When local anaesthesia is used, the patient leaves the clinic after the procedure. The wound is covered with a sterile patch, which is left until the stitches are removed (5–7 days). For the first few days, we recommend skipping any strenuous activity that could increase your blood pressure. It is a good idea to cool the eyelid area with sterile compresses with cold boric acid solution or ordinary reboiled water and to sleep on your back with your head slightly supported. Returning to work depends on what job you do. It is not advisable to strain your eyes at the computer for the first week. It is better to wait 1-2 days after removing the stitches before applying make-up. The procedure is highly effective. The result should be the removal of tired facial expression and the expansion of the visual field.

• If you do not stay in Prague after the procedure, a postoperative check-up will take place at your local general practitioner. If you stay in Prague, your surgeon will take care of you.

The incision is hidden in the fold of the upper lid. The outer edge of the incision is sometimes observable shortly after the intervention; however, it disappears over time, becomes almost invisible. Women can apply makeup after a few days if they deem it necessary.

Glasses can be worn immediately, contact lenses usually 1 week after surgery.

Swelling and bruising can occur, which disappears over time, after about one week. In the first few postoperative days, it is necessary to sleep only on the back to avoid unilateral swelling or major postoperative bruising. Most patients appear in public within 7–10 days after surgery. In general, the upper eyelids tend to recover faster than the lower eyelids.
