Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck) with Liposuction and Muscle Repair

Description of the procedure and the resulting effect

The incision is made based on various factors, which are evaluated at the preoperative consultation. Usually one long, horizontal incision is made in the lower abdomen. The second, small incision is around the navel. The skin and subcutaneous tissue are separated from the muscles and the abdominal wall is toned, if necessary, by suturing the abdominal muscles. Excess skin is removed, and a new hole is created for the navel. The scar remains in the lower abdomen to be easily covered with underwear.

The surgeon can assess that you suffer from Diastasis or separation of the straight abdominal muscles. This problem is solved by suturing, which re-tones the abdominal wall and the procedure has a more permanent result. The procedure can be combined with liposuction. After receiving the photos or in the personal consultation before the procedure, the attending physician will evaluate whether and which liposuction to use. Finally, the wound is closed with absorbable sutures.

The effect of the surgery is permanent if you follow the recommended diet with plenty of exercise.

Description of the procedure and the resulting effect

After greater weight loss or even after childbirth, the skin in the abdomen is loose, usually associated with weakening of the abdominal wall due to the separation of abdominal muscles. Excess skin often cannot be removed even by exercise and the solution can be plastic surgery of the abdomen – abdominoplasty. This is an extensive surgical procedure to remove excess fat, loose skin and to tone the muscles of the abdominal wall.

In general, both women and men undergo this surgery. If a woman is planning to become pregnant or intends to undergo, for example, a slimming treatment, it is advisable to wait with the surgery in order to achieve the greatest possible effect.

If a patient is diagnosed with Diastasis or separation of the straight abdominal muscle, such muscle is sutured and re-toned to support the abdominal wall and improve the result of the operation. The procedure can be combined with liposuction. After receiving the photos or in the personal consultation before the procedure, the attending physician will evaluate whether and which liposuction to use.

Convalescence

In case of postoperative pain, analgesics are prescribed. Postoperative pain can occur especially when changing positions or coughing. We recommend a semi-sitting position. For the first days after the operation, only light meals are served. Sutures are absorbable and do not need to be removed. Compressive garments should be worn for 6–8 weeks. It is not removed during the first 7 days after the surgery. The first weeks after the surgery, complete rest is recommended. You can return to work after about 3 weeks. Hard work, lifting weights and sports activities after up to 2 months. The effect of the surgery is permanent if you follow the recommended diet with plenty of exercise.

Frequently asked questions about the procedure

How long will I be out of work?

You should plan at least 3 weeks off to allow sufficient recovery time. However, if your work is physically demanding, count on a longer time to recover. Everything will be consulted with the surgeon.

How long will it take for the swelling to disappear and when will I see the result?

The result will be visible immediately, although full recovery may take 2–6 months. Your scar may be red and swollen during this time. It will disappear eventually.

How long will the result of the surgery last?

It can last for many years. Unless there is a large weight gain or a large change in body shape after pregnancy, the changes are permanent.

What can I expect after the surgery?

You can usually walk immediately after the intervention; in fact, it is recommended to walk several times a day. At first, you may not be able to stand up straight and you may walk with your back bent. The reason is that the skin of the abdomen will be firm after suturing. You will probably be instructed by your surgeon to try to bend slightly for the first 4–5 days after surgery.
